Planner's notes

It was lovely to welcome so many people to the New Forest on a day of gorgeous early autumn sunshine and colour. I am glad that most runners seemed to fully enjoy the experience.

Three issues deserve a mention. Nine controls had to be renumbered at the eleventh hour and I apologise for not fully covering the old numbers on one blue / green course control. The map showed its age despite recent revisions and needs further updating. Finally, two challenging control locations in gorse and bracken could easily be found through careful navigation but the placement was contrary to BOF guidelines (flag visible from 10m or 10% of the distance from the nearest attack point, and usually not at the bottom of depressions). All comments were well received and will inform future planning.

My thanks to Pete for coping admirably with some intriguing last-minute conundrums and also to the hard-working forest teams.

Organiser's Notes

It was great to have the event so well supported by regular orienteers and newcomers. I hope everyone enjoyed the day and that we provided you with a good event at the start of the season. Thanks to the weather gods for blessing us with a dry, fine day and to Forestry England for allowing us to use the area.

These events are totally reliant on a willing band of volunteers. So I'd like to extend a big thank you to today's team. Special mentions to Terry Smith for running download and producing the results and to Julia Loring for giving up her run to be the start team leader for the whole day.

SOC's next event is at Bramshaw on 8th October. Entries open this week at racesignup.co.uk (shameless plug :-)  )

Thanks, Marcus and Pete for…

Thanks, Marcus and Pete for a great event in a lovely area. I enjoyed the wide open vistas on an area I haven't orienteered on before.
