A registered event celebrating World Orienteering Week 2024 https://worldorienteeringweek.com/index.php/world-orienteering-week-2024/

Southampton Orienteering Club is hosting their first urban sprint event with a prologue and a final. This will be an opportunity to practice ahead of the South West and British Sprint Championships both being held in June, or to try an orienteering sprint event for the first time.

There are 3 courses; a long sprint, a short sprint, and an introductory-level sprint. Each will consist of 2 races, i.e. a qualifier heat and a final.

1 - Long Sprints (Chartwell Green)
Longer sprints for experienced orienteers around the urban Chartwell Green area. Race 1 length is 2.8k with an optimum length of 4.1km, race 2 is 2.2km with an optimum of 3.1km.

2 - Short Sprints (Chartwell Green)
Shorter sprints for experienced orienteers around the urban Chartwell Green area. Race 1 length is 1.6km with an optimum length of 2.8km, race 2 is 1.7km with an optimum of 2.0km.

3 - Introductory Sprints (The Gregg School)
Short sprints for inexperienced orienteers and those preferring to avoid roads, taking place within The Gregg School grounds and adjacent woodland. Race 1 length is 1.7km with an optimum distance of 1.9km, race 2 is 1.3km and 1.8km optimum.

The Gregg School Sprint

With the deadline to enter The Gregg School sprint event approaching I thought I’d share my experience of sprint events. Sprint events are short and aren’t about running as fast as you can, but paying attention to the detail of the map and the controls you are visiting. Even as an inexperienced orienteer I always find them good fun and an excellent way to work on improving my map memory. Enter at Racesignup. The event is also registered as a WOW – World Orienteering Week event, which aims to encourage young people to take up orienteering. If you know anyone who might be interested in trying orienteering on a short course, in a familiar environment, then just let them know.

Free biscuits provided between the 2 races too!
