Planners comments long and short sprints

At the final of the Wessex Regional Night League Mike Frizzell (BADO) suggested the area would make a good sprint event. So adding southwards to the map I was able to keep the sprints away from the main road through the estate, and gave enough area to have 2 distinct loops both for the long and short sprints. Apologies for the delay in getting the final started, but having lost one control at the end of the prologue, I wanted to make sure all the controls were in place for the final, and had a volunteer patrolling the woodland to keep an eye on things. Thanks to all the volunteer helpers, especially to Pete Davis heading up our new SI computing system.

Planners comments introductory sprints

I hope those that ran on the introductory sprints enjoyed themselves in the safe environs of the school grounds and the adjacent woodland (which used to be part of the grounds themselves).  I suspect that the planning of the first race was slightly too challenging for some of the younger and less experienced competitors, and the second race was perhaps slightly shorter than it should have been.  As my first attempt at planning sprint courses, I'll use these as a yardstick (metrestick) for future events.

And as Colin above says, I too would like to thank everyone who helped make today possible, including David and Bill for front & rear gate-duty, Vicky on parking, Kevin, Paul, and Steph for control hanging/collection, Norman for manning the finish, Pete and Alastair on computing (aided by James from Wessex), and Lou for the biscuits!

Routegadget

Thanks Pete for putting up Routegadget for all the sprint loops. Interesting to see the differing routes on both loops of the long sprint

On Monday 20th May we are hosting an activity for Cubs and Scouts at Hursley IBM. The activity starts at 1800. We will be using the new SportIdent equipment. The "Pick Up and Go" download kit will be in use as well as the standard two laptop download. This is a great opportunity to learn the SI ropes for download. If you'd like to take part please contact me: peterjdavis [at] gmail.com (peterjdavis[at]gmail[dot]com)

The Gregg School Sprint

With the deadline to enter The Gregg School sprint event fast approaching I thought I’d share my experience of sprint events. Sprint events are short and aren’t about running as fast as you can, but paying attention to the detail of the map and the controls you are visiting. Even as an inexperienced orienteer I always find them good fun and an excellent way to work on improving my map memory. Enter at Racesignup. The event is also registered as a WOW – World Orienteering Week event, which aims to encourage young people to take up orienteering. If you know anyone who might be interested in trying orienteering on a short course in a familiar environment then just let them know.

Free biscuits provided between the 2 races too!
