Thursday was the final day for the Romsey round of the Spring/Summer MapRun league. Many thanks to Norman Wilson for planning a challenging event with no one clearing all of the controls. It would have been a draw between David Currie and Andy Snell but, Andy having run significantly further, he was half a minute late returning leaving David to top the results. They were followed by Paul Thwaites, James Bennett, and Sam White. First female was Emily Hopkinson.
In the overall league results, David's first place meant he won the league with maximum points. Despite Andy beating Paul in the final race, the relative positions were just enough for Paul to stay ahead and take second place in the league. James Bennet was fourth and Matthew Gunton fifth, both having taken podium positions during the league. Emily Hopkinson was first female, just ahead of Rebecca Aspin.
Special mention also goes to Matthew Chessum, Allan Farrington, P Hopkinson, Mark Light, and Louise Light, who competed in all eight events. A big thank you also goes to Helen Wheelwright for doing all of the event management for the league.
That concludes the Spring/Summer League but all of the courses are still available through the MapRun app. Watch this space for news of what's coming next!
The Bramshaw event on Sunday, 3rd September is now open on racesignup.co.uk. We will need helpers to stage this event. Thank you so much to everyone who helped at Telegraph Woods today. Having such a seasoned band of volunteers really helped with my first venture into organising an event, and thanks to Helen Wheelwright for mentoring me very patiently in the run up to the event. It was a relaxed atmosphere, with the sun shining and the woods providing welcome shade. Despite competing with school summer holidays and the football World Cup final, we had lots of late entries from competitors willing to forego the chance to watch the Lionesses. Competitors on Short Green were challenged and impressed by the technical detail Kevin had managed to incorporate. There were several new orienteers and some returning to the sport - we hope you enjoyed the event and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

I hope you all enjoyed your outing in Telegraph Woods today. It was very pleasant out there in the warm sunshine.
Telegraph Woods is quite a small area but packs a big punch! It is probably our best small area outside of the New Forest with a lot of brown features and contour detail that provides some quite challenging orienteering.
The area like all patches of woodland in the middle of urban environments is heavily used by locals, new paths and bike tracks appear regularly. While at this time of year some paths become overgrown.
It was obvious from early on that courses would require careful planning to get the most out of the area and give participants a taste of the technical areas while avoiding too much of the heavy vegetation. I think many of you will have been surprised at the technical and physical challenge the woods provide!
Thank you all for the generous positive feedback. It would seem that we managed a reasonably good job. I was ably helped by my assistant planner Stephen Sutch along with Colin Hicks who both helped test out provisional courses and control sites. Thank you also to Mark Light who helped get the map sorted out for the event and made some minor but necessary map updates.
Rachel's attention to detail made for a well run event. A very impressive debut at organising an event! A big thanks to all the SOC helpers for making the event happen. Thank you to my team, Steve & Colin for putting out controls and Steve, Mark and Alastair for helping collect everything in so quickly.
