Valley Park MapRun begins

Many thanks to Paul Thwaites for organising a challenging MapRun around Townhill Park and Riverside Park. It was definitely one where you needed to take the contours into account when planning your route. At the top of the results were Paul and David Currie. Both got 26 out of 30 controls and incurred a 10 point time penalty (although only by two seconds in David's case) but Paul took top spot with 10 more points. As a consequence, Paul continues his climb up the league results, moving into joint second place with Andy Snell.

For the next round, Matthew Chessum has planned a course around Valley Park, Chandler's Ford. You have until the end of Thursday 20th July to take part with the social taking place on that day at The Cleveland Bay.

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves at today's event despite the heat. The rewilding of the old golf course continues apace and there were some significant updates to the map as the fairways disappear under the brambles. There's still some challenge for even the experienced orienteer and it was pleasing to hear some discussion of route choice at the finish. Please do upload your route to RouteGadget so I can see where you all went! 12 on the Blue (9 on the Green) certainly seemed to have caught a few people out.

As always, a big thank you to all those that helped make the event happen: Terry Sankey, Bernie Newitt, Duncan Currie, Lisa James, Eoghan Wiles, Vicki Barkaway, Mark Dalgarno, Christine Currie, and Bill and Barbara Davidson. A special thanks to Terry Smith for doing double duty on download and processing results, and Kevin Bracher for saving me from a return trip to the store!

Summer Series Fleming Park

SOC at Hants Schools Sports Festival 2023

It was a scorching day on the dry playing fields of King George V, Winchester yesterday but there was a festival feeling in the air. SOC once again put a team together to bring a taste of orienteering to 70 primary school children. Lots of fun was had by all and  a run around the maze proved to be a popular option despite the soaring temperatures. Some good contacts were made with schools which will be followed up in due course. Thanks to Barry Sowerbutts and Colin Stride for giving up their time to support this event.
